In 1990, a reluctant seventh-grader named Eric Emmett was coaxed into attending the after school practice of his middle school’s academic quiz bowl team. After lighting up his buzzer fifteen times that day, he was hooked. In 1994, Emmett attended the inaugural Ace Quiz Bowl Camp in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and he went on to captain championship teams on both the high school and collegiate levels.

In his career at Gordon Central High School in Calhoun, Georgia, Emmett earned nine tournament all-star awards, and his teams won several regional invitational tournaments, attended a national tournament in Dallas, Texas, and reached the playoffs at nationals in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1995 and 1996, Emmett captained teams that won back-to-back Georgia Academic Team Association AAA State Championships, without a single loss in the regional and state tournaments.  Emmett was a twice-selected member of Georgia’s All-Star Panasonic Academic Challenge team, finishing sixth nationally his senior year.

Emmett eagerly accepted a scholarship offer from legendary Berry College quiz team coach Gordon Carper, and he served as the captain of some of the most accomplished teams in the long history of the program. During Emmett’s career at Berry, the Vikings won three NAQT Undergraduate Sectional Tournament titles, three Southeastern Invitational championships, and Emmett picked-up one of his several tournament all-star awards when Berry College won the College Bowl, Inc. Region VI tournament in 1999. In 2001, Berry College was the Undergraduate Runner-up at NAQT Nationals, and the team’s sixth-place finish at ACF Nationals was the highest finish by an undergraduate-only team.  During his high school and college career, Emmett competed in ten national tournaments

After graduating from Berry College, Emmett turned his attention from history to education.  En route to earning a Masters in the Art of Teaching from Piedmont College in Demorest, GA, Emmett’s studies focused on facilitating the development of higher-order thinking and school reform.  Emmett taught middle grades social studies, and for seven years, he coached the same middle school team where it all began.  Emmett’s team won several regional league titles and advanced to the PAGE State Championship tournament. Emmett began writing tournament questions in high school and has been honing the craft ever since. For past decade, he has served as the chief question writer and editor of the high school and collegiate quiz bowl tournaments hosted by Berry College. He is now excited to bring his two decades of experience and expertise to the quiz team community through Quiz Team Questions.com!
