Competitor, Writer, Software Engineer
Chris Silvers was first introduced to academic bowl as a junior at Gordon Central High School in Calhoun, GA by his classmate and friend, Eric Emmett. Silvers was part of the Gordon Central team that won the 1995 and 1996 AAA GATA State Championships and competed twice at nationals. During the summer before his senior year, Silvers attended the Ace Quizbowl camp in Spartanburg, SC.
After high school, Silvers followed Emmett to Berry College near Rome, GA, where he also accepted a scholarship offer from Coach Gordon Carper. Over the following three years, Silvers enjoyed success with the Vikings and contributed to making the team one of the best undergraduate teams in the country. While at Berry, Silvers majored in both History and Physics.
As part of the dual-degree program between Berry College and the Georgia Institute of Technology, Silvers transferred to Georgia Tech to finish his undergraduate engineering studies. At Georgia Tech, Silvers quickly became the quiz bowl team’s captain and led the Yellow Jackets to a championship at the 1999 NAQT Southeast CCT and an appearance at NAQT nationals in Boston in 2000.
Silvers resumed his studies by Berry College in 2001 and rejoined the school’s team, serving as the team captain until he graduated in May 2002. Shortly after graduation, Silvers was honored by a special recognition from Gordon Carper as the Most Improved Player in Berry’s College Bowl Team history, spanning from when Carper started the program in 1970.
Beginning in 2001, Silvers teamed with Emmett to write the questions for Berry College’s high school and collegiate tournaments. He has been writing questions with Emmett for various tournaments since he was a high school student in the mid-1990′s and continues to do so today. Silvers earned a Bachelor’s of Arts from Berry College as well as a Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering and Masters of Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Tech. He is currently working as an embedded software engineer for Harris Corporation in Melbourne, FL.
